New Nintendo DSi Handheld Specifications

Today we will look at the Nintendo DSi specifications to see what the new handheld console has to offer. Released to Europe and US in April this new console will be the most advanced handheld on the market to date.

So lets take a look at the specs in detail.

Two screens, 3.25 inches in size. They are larger than the previous DS Lite and have a resolution of 256 x 192. The screens are smaller than the Sony PSP which has a 4.3 inch display and the Apple I-touch at 3.5 inch but bear in mind that the DSi has two screens creating a bigger viewing area.

Cameras. Two cameras provide the DSi with unique gaming abilities and one of them is VGA. The first camera is located on the internal hinge to capture the players face and the second is located externally on the corner of the lid allowing the user to take pictures like a proper camera and using the gaming screens to view the shot. The PSP has an optional camera, which is 1.3mega pixels. The iPod Touch has a built in camera of 2 mega pixels.

Memory wise the Nintendo DSi provides an SD Card slot along with internal flash memory storage of 256mb. The PSP can hold a memory card of up to 16gb and the iPod Touch has 8 to 32gb depending on which size the owner opts for.

All handhelds mentioned have Wi-Fi capabilities. This is an excellent feature which allows users to surf the web, connect with other consoles of the same type, and download new games, applications and software updates. They all have their own customised stores. Nintendo DSi has the DSi - ware shop, PSP has the PS Store and the iPod Touch uses the App Store.

The DSi has single touch screen technology, the PSP does not have this capability although there is a home brew piece of equipment that owners can buy to set up their own touch screen function. The iPod Touch does have touch screen which is multi-touch technology.

The Nintendo DSi is 12% thinner than the DS Lite but the length is a little longer. The power switch on the DS Lite has been replaced to a button on the DSi which is going back to the original DS. Primarily it will be released in matte black and matte white in Europe and the US. In Japan, Nintendo has already released colours in pink, lime green and metallic blue on 20th of March 2009. Battery life is reduced to 9-14 hours on the lowest brightness setting compared to the 15-19 hours of its predecessor. The Game Boy Advanced slot has been removed which means the DSi has lost backward compatibility. This decision was made to improve portability without sacrificing durability.

The CPU in the Nintendo DSi is an ARM clocked at 133 MHz and has 16 MB of RAM. and the speakers have been improved from the previous model. All said and done the Nintendo DSi is an impressive piece of equipment which will keep gamers happy until some thing bigger and better hits the market which for 2009 at least is very unlikely.

My fiancée bought the Glam Rock version of this toy, and I bought the Techno Groove version. They are all intrinsically the same toy but with different shell designs.

What I really like about the Tamagotchi V6 Music Star is the subtle micromanagement that is needed. It's good for three- to five-minute, manic bursts of taking care of your pet, then leaving it alone for three or four hours. The toy will beep at you about every two to four hours requiring some intervention, but otherwise, the virtual pets are quite happy by themselves, practicing their instruments or playing with their toys. They may get a visitor at the door occasionally, or they may get sick. So many things can happen to the Tamagotchi. You will see something new almost every day, be it a new school, instrument, or friend to play with. I think its biggest strength of this newest Tamagotchi is the pause feature; just press and hold A, then press B to pause the Tamagotchi. It will not beep, age, get sick, poop, feel hungry, or feel unhappy. You can also turn off the sound; press and hold A, then press C. I also like the feel of the actual unit; it is not unlike the original Tamagotchi. I really disliked the fake antennas that were on the previous versions.

My biggest complaint with this toy is the buttons. Sometimes, the buttons are hard to press and your presses do not always register. An extra firm press usually satisfies the hardware. It took some getting used to.

The Dora Links Doll is a new doll from Fisher Price® that received a strong amount of criticism by concerned parents. The issue stemmed from the perceived changes that were going to take place with the new Dora Links Doll. This doll is a slightly older version than the classic Dora which has been featured on the Dora The Explorerâ„¢ series. The main concern was over the possible look of the new Dora doll which some feared would make the doll look "tramp" like. This concern was raised after an early black and white silhouette of the new doll was given that gave some the impression she would be wearing a short skirt.

However, a newer version of the doll in color shows this to not be the case at all. Instead, Dora sports a pretty looking dress with leggings. This look is one fans have described as a-dora-ble and certainly doesn't give rise to the fear that Dora is dressing less than acceptable. Instead, most of the initial concerns of the Dora Links Doll have been replaced by curiosity and interest in what the new Dora can do. In fact, the new doll can do quite a lot.

The Dora Links doll is from the Dora the Explorer series, and has a USB connection with it. Girls can link the doll to a home computer and the doll will change as Dora progresses in her online world. Her hair, make up and other features will become customize, adding a unique virtual component to the toy. The new Elmo Live Encore doll, while not really an online toy, is very lifelike in the way it moves, sings, and interacts with young children. It seems that with the way these toys are going, the next step will be fully interactive robotic playmates for kids, which parents won't even have to pay to keep their kids occupied.

We believe that despite the negative criticism early on about this toy, the Dora Links Doll could very easily become a best seller this year. Early reviews of this product should give a strong indication of whether this product will be a winner this fall. "We first purchased the Tag for our (then) 5 year old son, but could not get the audio to download. After numerous emails to LeapFrog and many tries on several different (family & friends) computers, we just could not get it to work. Very disappointing as I felt that it was truly a quality product. The only book he can use with it is the one it came with.

Enter the Bugsby. Each book has it's own cartridge which has a place for storage inside the back cover. For that reason I gave it an extra star for "ease of use" (at least for us!). As long as you don't loose these you're good to go and can change out the cartridge for a new story as many times as you want(the Tag could only store 5 stories at a time, if you wanted to add more you add to remove another). The pen device works in the same manner as a Tag. It has a place for headphones to be plugged in, buttons to adjust the volume up and down and a "read the whole story" button.

As far as the book that comes with it goes, it's a simple story about how Bugsby, who has lost his glasses, searches within different stories (accompanied by his friends Josh and Hanna)to find them. Along the way it labels different animals, and includes "game" buttons on each page (with "stop", "repeat", "yes" and "no" buttons to be used with it). Games include things such as "Find the animal next to the squirrel", "What animal begins with this sound 'p'?", "Do these words have the same vowel sound, 'cup'/'mat'?" and have different levels. Touching in different areas of the book produce little silly sounds, characters saying a few phrases, and short songs. The back of the book includes a two page spread of the alphabet with games to go along with it and a "Story Writer" spread which allows the child to come up with several versions of a short story, changing the character, action and setting. The book has the option to read each individual page or the whole book. I would say the reading level is K-2 depending on the child.

Overall my son (and I) like this product. I don't think it offers quite as many games or levels of play as the Tag, and the way the narrator voice of the book says certain words sounds strange to me (the T's are overemphasized on certain words - other character voices are fine though). But considering the lower price and the fact that you don't have to worry about downloading anything, the Bugsby worked much better for us."

Most of my daughters toys are played with a few times and then forgotten, minus stuffed animals :D She mostly just 'reads' books and colors during the day when we aren't outside. When I saw the Color Me A Song, I just knew it would be perfect for her, because she LOVES coloring and music. I'm not sure about the other reviewer getting markers in hers, but the Color Me A Song is supposed to come with several triangular shaped crayons, which are great because they don't roll of the table :D They are easy for her and my 3 year old to hold. I also love the tray that you can keep the crayons in when not in use, so when we take it with us, I don't have to bring the crayon box too. To my surprise, my 3 year old, very active son also loves this toy. It has held up well, esp. since they both use it at the same time and will snatch it from each other, hehe. I couldn't have made a better investment, imo.

My son played with this toy at a friend's house a few months ago and was captivated by the ability to go through the door. We gave it to him yesterday for his first birthday. I was afraid that he would play with it for 30 minutes or so and move on but I was pleasantly surprised. He played with it for hours - and I mean hours - spending most of his time going through the door but also trying out the other features. Since nearly everything a person does with the toy causes it to make noise/music, etc. it keeps him stimulated. My son is a very active and curious little person so all of this toy's bells and whistles are critical to keeping him entertained. I have found it difficult over the past few months having enough toys to keep him entertained without breaking my budget or overwhelming our family room. I see this toy as a money saver since it keeps me from having to buy a bunch of other toys. In the time he spent on this toy yesterday, he would have played with a dozen toys or more any other day. My son wasn't happy when we took him away from the farm so that he could eat dinner and went right back to it afterwards. He's the type of person who will play until he drops from exhaustion so I think he would have played with this toy all night if I hadn't forced him to go to bed. :-)

I think the choking warning is in reference to the screws used to put it together. The screws are really tight, though, so I can't imagine how a child could get them out. I could barely get them in. I think the child would really have to break the other parts of the toy to get pieces small enough to swallow.

LeapFrog Zippity Learning System Video Game

The Zippity is a video game system designed for children ages three to five. Unlike most video game systems, it does not have a singular box and controllers. It does have an interesting controller that syncs wirelessly with the transmitter box that plugs into the television.

This controller has some very interesting footpads that are pressure sensitive. Kind of like Dance Dance Revolution, but for a much younger crowd. There is a big stick that the youngster can hold on to, which is there to help the kid's balance.

This big joystick controller is where the child can interface with the games, and a child is also able to use the pads as well. The Zippity comes with eight built in games based on popular Playhouse Disney characters. They have two games for each of the four Playhouse Disney shows, and each of these games have two levels. That is sixteen games in all.

Each of the included games have very good graphics, and all the character voices are genuine. Zippity is also going to have certain games in late 2009 with Disney Princesses: Magical Movement and Learning, Cars: Driven to Learn, and some learning games based on Disney’s soon-to-be released The Princess and the Frog.
